§ Dr. OwenAt 31st March 1974 there were 508 day nurseries provided by local authorities or by voluntary organisations under agency arrangements under Section 22 of the National Health Service Act 1946 with 25,724 children on their registers.
There were in addition 1,174 private nurseries and nursery classes in England and 63 in Wales, catering for a permitted maximum of 24,304 and 1,670 children respectively.
