§ Dr. OwenAs at 30th September 1973, the latest date for which figures are available, the total number of administrative staff—whole-time equivalent—employed or retained in the National Health Service in England was 11,339 and at headquarters and area offices in local authority social services departments was 6,700. The figures quoted exclude 171W clerical, secretarial and some specialised grades within the administrative and clerical group; they also exclude medical, nursing and other professional staff employed wholly or partly on administrative duties.
