HC Deb 26 February 1975 vol 887 cc150-1W
Mr. Moate

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she can estimate the number of persons living in homes for the mentally ill who could leave those homes if more suitable hostel or similar accommodation was available; and if she will make a statement.

Mrs. Castle

No reliable estimates are available. It is recognised that a range of residential accommodation is required, together with appropriate day care facilities and social work support, so that people may be placed according to their individual needs. There are some who may never be able to face the pressures of living independently and who will need long-term care.

The question of residential care will be covered more fully in the forthcoming White Paper on Services for the mentally ill.

Mr. Moate

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if it is her intention to publish a White Paper on the question of improved services to meet the needs of the mentally ill; and, if so, when publication can be expected.

Mrs. Castle

Yes, in the early summer.
