asked the Secretary of State for the Environment when he has it in mind to announce a date for the holding of a public inquiry on the proposal of the Greater Manchester Authority to construct a second runway at Ringway Airport.

At present the planning application for the second runway is still before the Cheshire County Council, which is carrying out its own investigations and consultations. It is my intention, at the appropriate stage, to call in the application for my own decision.

I cannot yet say when this stage will be reached nor, therefore, when I shall be able to announce a date for a public inquiry.
