asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the annual cost of lighting on all motorways and major roads.

The costs, in 1973–74, of maintaining lighting on trunk roads, including motorways, in England for which my right hon. Friend is responsible was about £1.6 million.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the cost of lighting one mile of motorway for one day.

Mr. Carmichael

The cost of electricity averaged over one year would be just over £3 per day for a typical mile of motorway.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the number of units of electricity consumed in lighting motorways in one year.

Mr. Carmichael

About 19 million units per year for 160 miles of lit motorway in England.
