asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many civil servants were employed in his Department on 1st January 1975 and on the same date in each of the three preceding years.

Mr. William Ross

9,882 civil servants were employed in my Department on 1st January 1975 and 9.460, 9,641 and 9,704 on the corresponding days in 1972, 1973 and 1974 respectively. These figures include the Scottish Prison Service and the State Hospital, Carstairs.
