§ Mr. Hoyleasked the Secretary of State for Trade how many people are employed by foreign-owned companies operating in Great Britain; what is the productive capacity of foreign-owned companies operating in Great Britain; and what is the proportion of United Kingdom exports manufactured by foreign-owned companies operating in Great Britain.
§ Mr. DeakinsThe information available on employment and output relates only to enterprises in manufacturing industry and the latest figures are for 1968. In that year foreign controlled enterprises in United Kingdom manufacturing industry employed 704,000 people and their net output—the value added to the materials by the process of production—was £1,900,000 million. These figures were published in Table 43 of Part 158 Summary tables, Enterprise analyses of the Report on the 1968 Census of Production; a copy of which is in the Library. No information is available on the productive capacity of these enterprises, as196W opposed to the output from the use of that capacity. In 1972 approximately 23 per cent. of total exports were accounted for by direct exports of foreign-controlled subsidies and branches in the United Kingdom in manufacturing industry. Information on direct exports of foreign controlled enterprises was published in Tables 56 and 57 of Business Monitor M4, Overseas Transactions, a copy of which is in the Library.
