HC Deb 11 February 1975 vol 886 cc122-3W
Mr. Sims

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many beds there were in England and Wales in establishments now classified as community homes in each of the years 1968 to 1974, inclusive; and, in each year, how many of these beds were classified as being in secure accomodation.

Dr. Owen

The following table shows the number of places available on 31st December each year in establishments in England and Wales that were formerly approved schools and remand homes and on 31st August each year approximate numbers for those that were local authority children's homes. With a few exceptions these schools and homes, together with some voluntary homes, formerly registered under the Children Act 1948, for which relevant information is not available, became community homes on 1st April 1973 or later. Figures for community homes show the position on 1st April each year.

Also shown is, to the best of my knowledge, the total number of secure places in such establishments at the end of each year:

Mr. Alfred Morris

The difference is that the former is concerned with service provision and the latter with research. Although there is inevitably some area of overlap, the chairman of the advisory committee is himself a member of the MRC working party and can ensure that each working party knows of the other's activities.

Mr. Lamborn

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will publish in the Official Report the terms of reference and the members of the two working parties appointed by the Advisory Committee on Services for Hearing-Impaired People; when it is anticipated they will report; and if it is intended to publish the report.

2. Mr. Alfred Morris
