HC Deb 10 February 1975 vol 886 c66W
Mr. Mike Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his Department's estimate of the savings in oil consumption that would be effected by a reduction in the speed limit for heavy goods vehicles on motorways and dual carriageways to 65, 60, 55 and 50 mph, respectively.

Mr. Carmichael

Heavy goods vehicles are already subject to speed limits of 40 mph on dual carriageway roads and 60 mph on motorways. To limit such vehicles to 50 mph on motorways, which carry only a small proportion of total traffic, would not yield any significant saving of fuel.
