HL Deb 06 February 1975 vol 356 cc1065-6WA
Lord CAMPBELL of CROY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is still intended that production of steel in Scotland should be increased by 25 per cent. in the current 10 year plan formulated with the British Steel Corporation and announced two years ago.

Lord BESWICK

The British Steel Corporation intends to raise its steelmaking capacity in Scotland to 4½ million tonnes, as envisaged in the 10-year Development Strategy published in February 1973. In the current review of proposed closures we will be discussing with the Corporation and the TUC Steel Committee the implications of this expansion of capacity for individual BSC plants in Scotland.

Lord CAMPBELL of CROY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What changes have been made in the 10-year plan, formulated with the British Steel Corporation and announced two years ago, as regards closures of plant in Scotland and the production in Scotland of steel products for the steel-using industries there.

Lord BESWICK

I cannot anticipate the outcome of the review of BSC strategy in Scotland which I am undertaking.

House adjourned at twentynine minutes before eight o'clock.
