Mr. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what representations he has received seeking the establishment of a committee to report on the position of Gaelic within the education structure of the Gaidheltachd; and whether he will make a statement.

Both my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State responsible for Health and Education and I have received letters from the Director of An Comunn Gaidhealach and we have also had letters from three hon. Members referring to the representations by An Comunn. I am considering all the points raised in this correspondence.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the number of prosecutions for criminal abortion in each of the last 10 years in Scotland.

The numbers of persons proceeded against for procuring abortion in each of the years from 1964 to 1973 were as follows:

The table below shows the number of deaths in Scotland classified to criminal abortion in each year from 1968 to 1974. Criminal abortion was not separately classified as a cause of death prior to 1968.
