§ Mr. Gouldasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will itemise the savings to the Exchequer which would be achieved if all tax allowances were calculated at the standard rate of income tax.
§ Mr. Robert SheldonThe calculations required to estimate the savings in respect of each individual tax allowance if they were all given only at the basic rate of tax are complex and require an adjustment to existing computer programmes. The Revenue is carrying out the additional work needed to produce the figures; and the Estimates should be available in a week or two. I shall send them to my hon. Friend and they will, of course, be available generally to hon. Members on request.
