HC Deb 15 December 1975 vol 902 cc477-8W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what was the value, respectively, of the shipbuilding and ship-repairing industries to the economy of the United Kingdom last year; and what proportion of these figures arose from Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England, respectively.

Mr. Kaufman

The net output of the shipbuilding, ship-repairing and marine engineering industry is estimated as £438 million in 1973, the latest period for which information is available. The latest regional analysis refers to 1972 and in that year three-quarters of net output was produced in England and one fifth in Scotland. Separate figures for Wales and Northern Ireland cannot be given for reasons of confidentiality.
