All medical, nursing and other professional staff employed wholly or partly on administrative duties, secretarial and clerical staff and, in the case of the National Health Service, specialised grades with the administrative and clerical group such as catering managers, are excluded. Increased numbers post-reorganisation (Col. 3) take account of salary increases in the period. All numbers relate to whole time equivalents. Table I Records of pay drawn by National Health Service staff are not maintained centrally and the numbers in Table I relate to posts authorised by the Department, pre-reorganisation to regional hospital boards, hospital management committees, boards of governors and executive councils, and post-reorganisation to regional and area health authorities and boards of governors, for establishment within their management scheme quotas for the period up to March 1976, England only. Additional functions were assumed by the new health authorities on reorganisation and staff fulfilling these functions post-reorganisation are consequently excluded from Col. 2. The 33 staff in Col. 4 are in new grades. Columns 3 and 4 of Table I include staff fulfilling functions related to primary health care, while prior to 1st April 1974 was the responsibility of local health authorities, and is not included in Column 2. Table II Because of the integrated nature of some areas of the Department's work, it is not possible to quote precise figures, but Table II gives approximate numbers in the health and social services administrative divisions in the Department of Health and Social Security.
