HC Deb 15 December 1975 vol 902 cc465-6W
Mr. Forrester

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will upgrade the Caldon Canal to cruising waterway status in recognition of the efforts of the local authorities in restoring most of the canal to the necessary standards and in fulfilment of the promises made by the Ministry of Transport in the late 1960s.

Mr. Denis Howell

I intend to consider the application by the British Waterways Board for an order under Section 104 of the Transport Act 1968 to upgrade the Caldon and other canals to cruising waterways in the light of the report by the consulting engineers who are at present investigating the cost of maintaining and operating the boards system of waterways.
