Mr. Silvester

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many abortions have been conducted in Manchester hospitals operating within the NHS for the latest convenient period; and how this compares with the national figure.

Available figures relate to hospitals controlled by the North-Western Regional Health Authority. There were 4,159 abortion notifications received from such hospitals in 1974 and 2,793 in the first three quarters of 1975. The comparable figures for England and Wales were 55,859 and 39,049.

Mr. Wrigglesworth

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total number of abortions carried out in the area of the Northern Regional Health Authority during each year from 1970 to the present, and for the first six months of 1975.
