§ Mr. Michael McNair-Wilsonasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in terms of earned income, there are any levels of taxation where it is economically beneficial for a couple to live together without being married, assuming both are earning.
§ Mr. Robert Sheldon, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 9th December 1975; Vol. 902, c. 111], gave the following information:
In general, there is not tax advantage, in relation to earned income, for a couple to live together as single persons. Where both are over 65, however, there may be an advantage if the combined earned income exceeds £3,300.
