§ Mr. Wigleyasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he is satisfied with the safety of United Kingdom citizens visiting France on holiday in view of French law which permits imprisonment without trial and in which a person is assumed to be guilty until proven innocent.
§ Mr. HattersleyYes. France has signed and ratified the Rome Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms 1950. Under this everyone arrested on suspicion of having committed or intending to commit an offence is entitled to trial within a reasonable time or to release pending trial, and everyone charged with a criminal offence is to be presumed innocent until proved guilty.
