HC Deb 11 December 1975 vol 902 c324W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection when she intends to bring in legislation to amend the Weights and Measures Act 1963 and related European Community instruments to enable metrication to proceed.

Mr. Alan Williams

The EEC Units of Measurement Directive requires the United Kingdom generally to adopt the use of metric units by the end of 1979. I hope to introduce legislation in the current Session to amend the Weights and Measures Act so as to enable my Department, in consultation with trade and consumer organisations, to ensure that the United Kingdom gives effect to this directive.
