HC Deb 11 December 1975 vol 902 c368W
Q22. Mr. Farr

asked the Prime Minister if he will assume direct responsibility for the Government Economic Service.

The Prime Minister

No. Responsibility for the management of economists in the Government Economic Service properly rests with the 20 or so employing Departments acting on the advice of the Head of the Service, and subject to the overall control, in respect of numbers and grading, of the Civil Service Department. The Head of the Service has a general responsibility for matters relating to professional standards, training, career development and the deployment of staff over the Service as a whole.
