HC Deb 11 December 1975 vol 902 cc350-1W
Mrs. Jeger

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what progress has been made in the negotiations for the purchase of the site for the British Library.

Mr. Hugh Jenkins

As I announced on 5th August, negotiations have been opened with the National Freight Corporation and the British Rail Board for the purchase of a site owned by them in the Euston Road to accommodate the new British Library building. This will provide a more satisfactory and economical solution than the site previously contemplated in Bloomsbury. Negotiations are well under way, and site notices have been displayed, and a Press advertisement is to be issued in accordance with the principles of Section 26 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1971, as a preliminary to the consultation procedure that my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment will have with Camden Borough Council, as the local planning authority.
