HC Deb 10 December 1975 vol 902 cc218-9W
Mr. Evelyn King

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is her estimate of the total number of persons over 65 years of age in Great Britain; and what percentage of them live in publicly-owned institutions.

Dr. Owen

According to estimates published by the Registrar General of England and Wales and Scotland, the resident population of Great Britain aged 65 and over at 30th June 1974 was 7,547,000.

About 1½ per cent. of persons aged 65 and over live in local authority residential homes and some 2 per cent. are in National Health Service hospitals at any one time.
