Mrs. Chalker

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services when she will make a statement on a preferential disregard for one-parent families on supplementary benefit.

Mr. O'Malley

There is nothing I can add at present to the reply my right hon. Friend gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Welwyn and Hatfield (Mrs. Hayman) on 4th November 1975.—[Vol. 899, c.103.]

Mr. Tim Renton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what has been the increase in the number of unemployed on supplementary benefit for the present year up to the latest date for which figures are available.

Mr. O'Malley

In November 1974 there were 302,000 unemployed persons in receipt of supplementary benefit. In August 1975, the latest date for which information is available, the number had increased to 617,000, but of these 64,000 were students.
