HC Deb 09 December 1975 vol 902 cc154-5W
53. Sir David Renton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether she will make a statement about the future of the kidney research centre at Cambridge with special reference to the grants received and to be received towards the cost of maintaining it.

Dr. Owen

Health services provided in the renal unit in Cambridge are financed from within the resources available to the Cambridgeshire Area Health Authority (Teaching). Some research work done there was formerly supported by funds specifically allocated by the Department, but responsibility for any financing has passed to the area health authority (teaching), subject only to one minor matter which is currently the subject of correspondence between the Department and the regional treasurer about central support for part of the expenditure connected with tissue typing. I understand that research in Cambridge into kidney disease is also financed from a number of non-National Health Service sources and that the area health authority (teaching) has not been approached for financial support for activity beyond that already covered in its budget.
