§ Mr. Jim Spicerasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what reports he has received about the re-settlement of Chilean refugees in South America, with particular regard to the expenditure of £250,000 authorised by the Government to assist in such re-settlement.
§ Mr. PrenticeI have been asked to reply.
I have received comprehensive reports from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on his very effective programme of assistance to refugees suffering as a result of political persecution by the Chilean Government. Her Majesty's Government has contributed £250,000 to this programme over the last two years. By 31st August of this year 9,045 refugees had been resettled as a result of the High Commissioner's efforts.
