HC Deb 05 December 1975 vol 901 cc478-9W
Mr. Peter Rees

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the amount of public expenditure per head of the population in each of the past 10 years for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, shown separately for each.

Mr. Joel Barnett

The following table showns identifiable public expenditure per head in each country for the period 1969–70 to 1974–75, the only years for which information is available for all countries. The figures for England and Northern Ireland in the first four years are partly estimated.

Mr. Denzil Davies

There are already provisions in the tax code under which various reliefs are available for many such contributions. On 22nd September it was announced that the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster had been asked by the Prime Minister to undertake, in consultation with the Minister responsible for the arts, a thorough assessment of the financial problems facing the arts. This assessment will include consideration of the relevant tax provisions.
