HC Deb 05 December 1975 vol 901 c351W
Mr. MacGregor

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will list the various mileage allowances for the appropriate groups in the Civil Service.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

The standard rate of mileage allowance is paid when a private motor vehicle is used on official business provided certain conditions about the particular journey are satisfied and the officer has normal comprehensive insurance cover. The allowances for cars with an engine capacity of more than 500 cc are calculated by reference to the schedules of estimated motoring costs published from time to time by the Automobile Association taking into account up-to-date petrol prices. The standard rates of mileage allowance, which depend on the type of vehicle and the engine capacity, are as follows:

Rate per mile Type of Vehicle and Engine Capacity
Motor Cycle Motor Car including 3-wheel vehicle
2.2p 150cc or less 150cc or less
2.7p 151cc–235cc 151cc–245cc
3.8p 246cc–500cc 246cc–500cc (except Fiat 500)
4.7p 501cc and over
7.9p 501cc–1,000cc (including Fiat 500)
9.4p 1,001cc–1,750cc
10.2p 1,751cc and over

In certain circumstances reimbursement is at the public transport rates of mileage allowance, which are currently as follows:

Rate per mile Type of Vehicle and Engine Capacity
Motor Cycle Motor Car including 3-wheel vehicle
2.2p 150cc or less 150cc or less
2.7p 151cc–245cc 151cc–245cc
3.8p 246cc–500cc 246cc–500cc (except Fiat 500)
4.1p 501cc and over All other engine capacities (including Fiat 500)
