HC Deb 05 December 1975 vol 901 cc435-6W
Mr. Peter Walker

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether she has now made a decision as to whether she is going to make Huntington's chorea a notifiable disease.

Dr. Owen

I have now taken advice and concluded that on balance it would not be appropriate or indeed necessarily effective if Huntington's chorea were to be made a notifiable disease. However, the Department is currently considering in consultation with the Clinical Geneticists Society, ways in which genetic counselling services might be more effectively provided for potential sufferers from this disease, including schemes for the registration of known sufferers.
