Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will publish a table showing for 1960, 1965, 1970 and the latest date for which the information is available, the total number of employees in the non-industrial public sector, distinguishing between Civil Service and other civilian employees of central Government, local government employees and National Health Service and water personnel.

I can only answer for the Civil Service. The number of non-industrial civil servants at 1st October in each of the four years is as follows:

1960 381,838
1965 423,347
1970 498,709
1975 540,172

Staff of the Post Office have been excluded throughout.
