Mr. Robert Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many police were on duty for the recent lobby of Parliament by the unemployed; and how these numbers compare with similar lobbies over the past five years.

Dr. Summerskill

1,264 police officers were on duty in connection with the lobby and associated march on 26th November. Numbers for other recent lobbies were as follows:

14th March 1974

National Union of Students: 334 police officers.

29th April 1974

National Union of Teachers: 758 police officers.

11h July 1974

National Union of Teachers: 976 police officers.

14th January 1976

Trade Union Congress (sponsors): 1,307 police officers.

19th May 1975

Steel workers: 515 police officers.

21st October 1975

Steel workers and Campaign for Educational Advancement: 1,094 police officers.

The number of officers allocated to such events is related to the expected number of participants, which cannot always be accurately estimated in advance.
