HC Deb 04 December 1975 vol 901 cc707-8W
Mr. Canavan

asked the Secretary of State for Energy (1) what is the annual amount of home-produced coal which is exported; what this represents expressed as a percentage of the total annual domestic coal produced; and what is the breakdown of countries to which it is exported;

(2) what is the annual amount of home-consumed coal which is imported; what this represents expressed as a percentage of the total annual amount of coal consumed in the United Kingdom; and what is the breakdown of countries from which it is imported.

Mr. Eadie

Statistics on production, consumption, imports and overseas shipments of coal are published monthly in Tables 5 and 7 of "Energy Trends". The latest complete year for which figures are available is 1974 and in that year imports amounted to 3.5 million tons and overseas shipments to 1.6 million tons. Imports represented about 3 per cent. of inland consumption and overseas shipments amounted to about 2 per cent. of production of coal. Full details of the sources and destinations of imports and exports of coal in 1974 will be found in Tables 99 and 100 of the Digest of United Kingdom Energy Statistics 1975. Both these publications are available in the Library.
