HC Deb 03 December 1975 vol 901 cc586-7W
Mr. George

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many deaths from fire have occurred since 1962; and how many persons have been rescued from the scene of a fire since 1962.

Dr. Summerskill

The information for each of the years in question is given in the following table:

brigade was called to a fire at the Central Cold Storage Company, Leamore Lane, Walsall. The premises comprised a single-storey brick building, with a corrugated asbestos roof and polystyrene and steel insulation panels. The building contained a large quantity of fats, butter, meat and vegetables. The fire, which is thought to have been caused by the ignition of polystyrene panels by sparks from oxyacetylene equipment used during construction work, severely damaged the building and its contents, and 10 firemen suffered minor injuries.
