HC Deb 02 December 1975 vol 901 c500W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many personnel in his Department are engaged in agriculture, fisheries and food matters, respectively; and of those engaged in food matters, how many are engaged in furthering the food industry and how many in the administration and extension of controls.

Mr. Peart

Of the total staff of about 15,600, about 11,000 are engaged in agriculture matters, including horticulture; 650 in fisheries and 700 in food matters. The balance are concerned with other functions or provide common services. Those concerned with food cover a range of functions in the general interests of the food industries, including the maintenance of standards and safety of food; about 150 staff are engaged on work arising from food subsidies on behalf of DPCP.
