§ Mr. MacGregorasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what would be the total cost to the Exchequer in the current financial year if, instead of the present thresholds and higher rates of tax, there were substituted the following: up to £10,000 at 35 per cent., next £2,000 at 40 per cent., next £3,000 at 45 per cent., and the remainder at 50 per cent.;
(2) what would be the total cost to the Exchequer in the current financial year if, instead of the present thresholds and higher rates of tax, there were substituted the following: up to £10,000 at 35 per cent., next £1,000 at 40 per cent., next £2,000 at 50 per cent., next £3,000 at 60 per cent., and the remainder at 70 per cent.
