HL Deb 07 August 1975 vol 363 cc1993-4WA
Lord GRANVILLE of EYE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether security cards are issued to everyone using the Palace of Westminster; whether routine examination takes place of individuals (including suppliers) who cannot be recognised; and whether there are adequate personnel to supervise this procedure.

The Earl of LISTOWEL

Security cards in the form of photographic and other types of passes are issued to Peers, Members and to others who regularly work in the Palace of Westminster or have occasion to attend there frequently. Individuals, including those who work for suppliers, who have temporary business in the Palace of Westminster are screened on entry and may be given security passes permitting limited access. Members of the public attending the galleries or Committees and those who come to visit the Palace of Westminster when it is open to the public are not provided with passes, but they are supervised at the point of entry and have their hand baggage searched. There is adequate staff to supervise these procedures.

Lord GRANVILLE of EYE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are satisfied that, following the completion of the House of Commons car park access, access (including access by river) to the Palace of Westminster is patrolled at all times.

The Earl of LISTOWEL

Access to the underground car park is a matter for the House of Commons. Other entrances giving access to the Palace of Westminster are manned by police officers during the times they are open. Police and security staff are on duty within the precincts throughout the day and night. Electronic alarms are also provided.
