asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the ton-mileage of freight carried in 1974 by road, rail, coastal shipping, inland motorways and pipelines, respectively.

Provisional estimated figures for the ton-mileages of freight carried in 1974 in Great Britain are:

Road 55.0 thousand million ton miles
Rail 14.8 thousand million ton miles
Coastal Shipping
12.5 thousand million ton miles
British Waterways
0.05 thousand million ton miles
Pipeline 2.1 thousand million ton miles
Total: 84.5 thousand million ton miles
