HC Deb 07 August 1975 vol 897 cc518-9W
Mr. Hoyle

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if, in view of the Government's investment in British Leyland, he will ascertain whether British Leyland has any financial interest in Hyondai; and what is the number of vehicles that the dies, jigs and fixtures manufactured by British Leyland for Hyondai are designed to cater for.

Mr. Gregor Mackenzie

British Leyland has no financial interest in Hyondai Motors. British Leyland, in common with a number of other British manufacturers, is supplying equipment to Hyondai. Any unwillingness to supply on the part of United Kingdom companies would merely be to the advantage of manufacturers in other countries.

Mr. Hoyle

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if, in view of the Government's investment in British Leyland, he will ascertain why British Leyland dropped out of the 1100 cc car market and then designed a similar vehicle for a Far Eastern competitor, whilst at the same time asking for restrictions to be placed on competition from Japanese cars; whether British Leyland has any plans for designing further models for other Far Eastern competitors; and whether British Leyland carried out any design work for Datsun.

Mr. Gregor Mackenzie

British Leyland has not dropped out of the 1100 cc car market. I understand that on no occasion has the company designed a complete vehicle for any other company, and it has no plans to do so.
