HC Deb 07 August 1975 vol 897 cc403-4W
Mr. Anthony Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what progress has been made with the construction of the new British Embassy in Brasilia; and when he expects it to be completed and occupied by the embassy staff.

Mr. Hattersley

The present temporary accommodation in Brasilia is to be replaced by a permanent residence for the Ambassador and a permanent chancery with ancillary accommodation in a phased programme.

The residence is being granted priority, and design work is approaching final sketch plan stage. Construction is planned to commence in early 1977 with completion expected by early 1979.

Design work on the new chancery will be started later this year to enable building to commence at the end of 1978 for occupation by early 1981.
