HC Deb 04 August 1975 vol 897 cc76-7W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what was the total number of unfit dwellings in Wales in 1950, 1960, 1970 and 1974; and what proportion this represented of all dwellings in Wales.

Mr. Alec Jones

The information is not available in the form requested. A Welsh house condition survey in 1968 estimated that there were 91,900 unfit houses in Wales, corresponding to 10.4 per cent. of the total housing stock. When the survey was repeated in 1973, the estimated number of unfit houses was 147,500, corresponding to 14.9 per cent. of the total stock.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what was the total number of dwellings and proportion of all dwellings in Wales in the following categories at the end of 1950, 1960, 1970, 1973 and 1974; (a) Owner-occupied, (b) rented from local authorities or new town corporations, (c) rented from private owners and (d) other tenancies.

Mr. Alec Jones

The information is given in the following table:

of Housing and Local Government in 1969 made clear that, in considering any planning application for converting a house to some other use, the need for houses in the area and the desirability of keeping the building in residential use will be taken into account. The Note pointed out that in some areas this may be a decisive objection to the development.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what was the total number of dwellings completed in Wales in the public and private sector in each year since 1960; and if he will break down the public sector into completions by (a) local authorities, (b) new town corporations, (c) housing associations and (d) central Government Departments.
