HL Deb 04 August 1975 vol 363 c1449WA
Lord REIGATE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many persons were recommended for deportation in the years 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974; and in how many cases in each year were the recommendations rejected.

Lord HARRIS of GREENWICH

The relevant information is as follows:—

year Number of recommendations for deportation received from courts Number of cases where decisions were made not to deport
1970 795 101
1971 824 134
1972 809 84
1973 677 51
1974 638 94

The decisions not to deport made in a calendar year are not all related to court recommendations made in that year.

Many persons recommended for deportation were removed from the country under arrangements for supervised departure, without formal deportation. Others left the country voluntarily before a decision on a recommendation to deport could be reached.
