HC Deb 04 August 1975 vol 897 cc49-50W
Mr. Cormack

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how much land was under cultivation in each of the following years: 1945, 1950, 1960, 1970 and 1974, respectively.

Mr. Bishop

The figures for the United Kingdom as at June each year are as follows:

Crops and grass excluding rough grazing
('000 acres
1945 1950 1960 1970 1974
31,023 31,126 30,860 30,290 30,111

The figures for 1970 and 1974 include estimates of the acreage of crops and grass on holdings with insignificant output, which were not covered by the agricultural censuses in those years but were covered by the 1945, 1950 and 1960 censuses. Some of the apparent fall in acreage between 1960 and 1970 is probably due to the area of woodlands and of land under buildings, farm roads and so on being shown separately from 1969.
