School Premises and Sports Facilities

Mr. Roderick

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what advice he has given to local authorities on the fuller use of school premises and sports facilities by outside organisations out of school hours.

In 1964 a joint circular "Provision of facilities for Sport" issued by the then Ministry of Housing and Local Government and the Department of Education and Science, urged local authorities to make the fullest use of school facilities and where new facilities were being provided to design them so that they could be used both by the school and the community. Since then successive Governments have continued to encourage the joint use and joint provision of recreational facilities in schools.
