HL Deb 19 April 1975 vol 360 c1180WA
Lord LLOYD of KILGERRAN

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they still hold that the status of Taiwan is undetermined and how and when they intend to fulfil their obligations to that territory under the Japanese Peace Treaty signed in San Francisco in 1951.

Lord GORONWY-ROBERTS

Her Majesty's Government acknowledge the position of the Chinese Government that Taiwan is a province of the People's Republic of China. Both the Government of the People's Republic of China and Taipei maintain that Taiwan is a part of China. We held the view both at Cairo and Potsdam that Taiwan should be restored to China. That view has not changed. Her Majesty's Government consider that the Taiwan question is an internal Chinese affair to be settled by the Chinese people themselves. Her Majesty's Government do not have obligations to Taiwan under the Japanese Peace Treaty.

House adjourned at thirteen minutes before eleven o'clock.
