§ 37. Mr. David Steelasked the Secretary of State for Employment if it is Government policy that university teachers are a special case within the terms of the social contract guidelines.
§ Mr. BoothThe Government, in setting up the Houghton Committee on 24th May 1974, accepted that non-university teachers should be treated as a special case. University teachers were not included in the remit of the committee. The Government accept the general principle which was outlined in the Houghton Report that there should be parity in pay between teachers in universities and teachers undertaking comparable work in other institutions of higher education. I understand that negotiations on this question are now taking place.
