HC Deb 29 November 1974 vol 882 cc276-7W
Mr. Wiggin

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if, in furtherance of the Sessional Order, he will request the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police to have a traffic warden or policeman on duty at St. Stephen's Entrance to assist hon. Members and visitors to the Palace of Westminster across the road.

Dr. Summerskill

I understand that the Commissioner of Police has already made arrangements to ensure that hon. Members can cross the road quickly at this point when a Division is called. In view of the proximity of the pedestrian crossing at the corner of Parliament Square he would be reluctant to establish a further full-time control at this point, but he will continue to do all he can to ensure the speedy access of all hon. Members to the House at all times.
