HC Deb 28 November 1974 vol 882 c231W
Mr. Berry

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the total saving resulting from the withdrawal of the London allowance from postgraduate students at Royal Holloway College, Egham, and Wye College, Ashford; and what would be the saving based on the same rate if this were to be withdrawn from undergraduates at the same colleges.

Mr. Prentice

A London rate of grant for postgraduate students was introduced in the academic year 1974–75 and applies to students attending educational establishments within the boundaries of the City of London and Metropolitan Police areas. The Royal Holloway College at Egham and Wye College at Ashford lie outside these boundaries, but the matter is now under review. In the case of undergratuates at these colleges, it has been and is the practice to pay the London rate. To withdraw it would save up to £88,000 in the current academic year.
