asked the Minister for the Civil Service how many scientists employed on original scientific research in Government establishments are based, respectively, in England, Scotland and Wales.

On 1st January 1974 the number of scientific staff employed in the non-industrial Civil Service was as follows:

England 14,500
Scotland 1,050
Wales 210
15,760

Figures for scientists employed on original scientific research in Government establishments are not available centrally and could not be ascertained without incurring disproportionate cost.
