Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what commitment to NATO exists for the provision by the United Kingdom of task forces requiring the existence of (a) the Paratroop Regiment and (b) the Royal Marines.

Mr. William Rodgers

The Parachute Regiment provides the Army element of the United Kingdom Joint Airborne Task Force which is earmarked for assignment in war to NATO, and the Royal Marines provide the landing force element of the United Kingdom Amphibious Forces which are similarly earmarked.

Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Defence in which NATO exercises the Paratroops and Royal Marines have taken part during the last 10 years.

Major NATO exercises in which the Parachute Regiment, including the TAVR, and the Royal Marines have taken part are listed below. In addition to these, elements of the Parachute Regiment have participated in approximately 25 smaller scale exercises with one or more of our NATO allies since 1964. The Royal Marines did not take a full part in NATO exercises until 1968. Prior to then the bulk of Commando Forces were deployed east of Suez.
