Mr. Lamborn

asked the Prime Minister if he will announce the composition of the United Kingdom relegation to the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The Prime Minister

I have appointed 18 delegates from the Parliament of the United Kingdom to the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe. The delegation this year will consist of 10 Members of the Labour Party, seven Members of the Conservative Party and one Member of the Liberal Party. I have also appointed a number of substitute delegates.

The appointments of Conservative and Liberal representatives and substitutes have been made on the basis of nominations by the Leaders of those parties.

The same delegation will be representing the United Kingdom Parliament at the Assembly of the Western European Union.

Representatives from the Government benches will be: My hon. Friend the Member for Ilkeston (Mr. Fletcher), who will act as Leader. My hon. Friends the Members for:

  • Stalybridge and Hyde (Mr. Pendry).
  • Penistone (Mr. Mendelson).
  • Glasgow, Garscadden (Mr. Small).
  • Leeds, South-East (Mr. Cohen).
  • Hammersmith, North (Mr. Tomney).
  • Farnworth (Mr. Roper).
  • Houghton-le-Spring (Mr. Urwin).
  • Kingston upon Hull, East (Mr. Prescott).
  • Greenock and Port Glasgow (Dr. Mabon).

Representatives from the Conservative Party will be:

  • The hon. Member for Sevenoaks (Sir J. Rodgers).
  • The hon. and learned Member for Solihull (Mr. Grieve).
  • The hon. Members for
  • Ravensbourne (Mr. Hunt).
  • Aldershot (Mr. Critchley).
  • Sheffield, Hallam (Mr. Osborn).
  • Harrow, West (Mr. Page).
  • and the Lord Duncan Sandys.

The representative from the Liberal Party will be:

  • The hon. Member for Roxburgh, Selkirk and Peebles (Mr. Steel).

The following substitutes have been appointed to act as necessary on behalf of the delegates.
