HC Deb 27 November 1974 vol 882 cc193-4W
Mr. Thorne

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether it is possible to provide through the National Health Service free day-nursing at home to persons completely paralysed following spinal/head injuries sustained in motor, industrial or other accident.

Dr. Owen

Area health authorities have a duty where necessary to provide appropriate nursing services free of charge to patients in their own homes. Local arrangements for the provision of such services for persons in the categories mentioned by my hon. Friend are a matter for the authority locally, subject to the resources available to it and to an assessment of the full circumstances of each case including the suitability of the home and the presence of relatives or friends able to provide the long-term care and support which may be required.
